Are you a musical practitioner and/or researcher with interests in collaboration?
Join us at the Royal Academy of Music on the 20th June from 10am for the first annual Study Day of the Royal Musical Association’s Composer-Performer Collaboration Study Group.
The day will consist of paper presentations, mini-recitals, and roundtable sessions, with lots of time for networking, followed by an exciting keynote (delivered remotely) by Dr Camilla Hoitenga, discussing her collaboration with Kaija Saariaho.
We invite proposals for presentations and recitals to engage with Composer-Performer Collaboration (CPC). Submissions are welcome across a wide range of perspectives, including—but not limited to—the following fields:
- Unique instruments in CPC
- New technologies and techniques in CPC
- Methods, documentation, research outcomes of CPC
- Practice-research/artistic research methods and CPC
The study group was set up to bring more musical practitioners into the space of ‘research’, so please don’t restrict submissions to PowerPoint presentations and polished recitals! We’re keen to see reflections, works-in-progress, theories-in-progress, and to meet musicians and researchers who see collaboration as central to musical creativity.
To be considered for presenting during the day, please submit a brief abstract (max 150 words) or a link to a short video/audio recording (max 1 minute). To be part of a roundtable discussion, please write a brief description of your musical practice and research perspective and how these relate to the theme.
There is no need to bring a submission in order to take part, but due to limited space availability for in-person attendance, we would still ask every potential delegate to fill in the application form. Please return the application form by the deadline of 14 May 2025.

Delegates are also welcome to attend an independent Royal Academy of Music research event, Composing a Musical Life, starting at 6pm. Please note that for this event, tickets need to be booked at https://www.ram.ac.uk/whats-on/composing-a-musical-life.
The Study Day will be organized in a hybrid form, and participants are welcome to join both in person and online.
