The RMA/Cambridge University Press Outstanding Monograph Book Prize for 2024 is awarded to Jairo Moreno (University of Pennsylvania) for Sounding Latin Music, Hearing the Americas (2023, University of Chicago Press).
This book interrogates the intersection of Latin America and the United States through an impressive range of case studies of ‘Latin American’ music. The panel commended this monograph for its depth, breadth and intellectual rigor, and particularly noted the wider relevance and timeliness of its discussions of migrant creativity and modernity.
In addition, the panel wish to give an honourable mention to Hettie Malcomson (University of Southampton) for Danzón Days: Age, Race, and Romance in Mexico (2023, University of Illinois Press). Based on more than a decade of immersive fieldwork, this book presents a detailed, nuanced and imaginative ethnography which analyses the complexities of danzón in Veracruz.
